Stonington Point and Dubois Beach

Just taking a short trip to the northeast?  Well after standing at Stonington Point you will be able to tell your friends that you saw New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, all in one eye shot.   Dubois Beach, adjacent to the point, is a great way to catch some rays without fighting the crowds of the larger beaches.  A day pass runs you $10 per person and can be purchased at the gate. A great family friendly beach with easy access, Dubois Beach gets you in the water without fighting the beach traffic of the larger Rhode Island Beaches.

The Lighthouse Museum and Captain Palmer House

History buffs will love a visit to the Lighthouse Museum and Captain Palmer House.  However, even if you don’t fancy yourself a historian be sure to take a trip to the top of these structures for some great photo ops.  Built in 1840, guests cans tour the lighthouse while learning about the area’s agricultural and maritime beginnings.  Climb the 29 steps to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy the view.  Your $10 ticket also includes admission to the Captain Palmer House.  This 16-room historic home of Captain Nathaniel Brown Palmer and Alexander Smith Palmer was erected in 1854. Family stories and tales of the Captain’s discovery of Antarctica are shared during the guided tour.

The Historic Homes

Historic Home in Stonington Borough The perfect spot for that hand-in-hand stroll, the Stonington Borough streets are lined with beautifully maintained historic homes evoking a feeling of stepping back in time.  One can almost imagine a dapper man in his top hat and tails exiting his home and meeting his carriage.    If you’ve got an extra one or two million lying around there are a few historic homes for sale with amazing water views.

The Great Restaurants

Margarita fans rejoice.  For the Stonington Borough has arguably the best margaritas on this side of the boarder.  Manana Café serves them up these margaritas with homemade infused tequila.  Oversized, so one is all you need, the “extra” is served in your personal shaker.  Be sure to hold the top when you pour your 2nd half! They’ll tell you this time and time again, but if you are anything like me you’ll end up pouring at least one margarita being poured all over your table.

If you are here for the views be sure meander just down the street to Dog Watch Café’s outdoor bar “The Dog Pound”.  Try and be there as the sun is setting for one of the most beautiful views of your trip.  Let your competitive streak fly and throw some cornhole or play a game of life size Jenga.  For dinner venture inside or to the front porch dining area for some fresh local seafood caught in the Stonington harbor.

The Local Events

Be sure to check the calendar for some great local events.  The Stonington Village Fair is celebrating its 65th year this month!  The December Holiday Stroll features horse drawn carriage rides and refreshments in stores while your wrapping up (or starting) your holiday shopping.  Every Old Lighthouse Museum in Stonington BoroughSaturday (location changes seasonally) the Stonington Village Farmers Market features locally sourced seafood, vegetables, fruit, and other goods.
